Route: Walla Crag
Area: Central Lake District
Date of walk: 3rd March 2016
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 3.7 miles
Ascent: 1,000 feet
Weather: overcast and rather dull
We parked in the National Trust car park at Great Wood and followed a track in the direction of Ashness Bridge, ignoring a sign for Walla Crag which appeared after a short distance. We were ascending via a different and more direct route, and one which we’d not used for several years
Our route was to be alongside Cat Gill, and when we reached the fork in the path it was signposted ‘steep climb!’ Steep by whose standards we wondered’ If those of Chris Bonnington, then we were in trouble. As we anticipated however, there were no difficulties and most of the steep sections were made easy by rocky staircases
We were soon at the top admiring the wonderful views over Keswick and the north western fells – however it was a shame that the weather was rather dull and lifeless
The descent to Rakefoot was a pleasant stroll, with good views of Skiddaw and Blencathra though their heads were covered by cloud. We walked back into Great Wood and along the forest paths back to the start of an enjoyable short walk
