Route: Birks, St Sunday Crag and Arnison Crag
Area: Eastern Lake District
Date of walk: 4th March 2013
Walkers: Andrew and James
Distance: 7.2 miles
Ascent: 2,500 feet
We parked in the Patterdale Hotel car park and made our way up to Birks (2,040 feet). Our plan was to go on to Arnison Crag, but St Sunday Crag (2,756 feet) looked invitingly close so we decided to hike up there as well. It only took about 30 minutes and was worth the effort as the views were tremendous. We then came back down the same way and went to Arnison Crag (1,424 feet) via Trough Head, following a lovely path.
We descended Arnison Crag along its ridge, direct into Patterdale, with lovely views of Ullswater all the way down.
There was plenty of blue sky and sun but it was hazy, so the long distance views were a slight disappointment. Nevertheless, another great walk.
