Route: Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey
Area: South Eastern Lake District
Date of walk: 9th April 2014
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 6.7 miles
Ascent: 500 feet
Weather: Overcast but dry and brightened up towards end
The fells were mostly clouded over in the morning so we decided on a low level walk. We tend to neglect the south lakes as it takes us over an hour to get there from our home in the north west, even though the distance is only 30 miles or so
We parked near the ferry on the west shore of Windermere and walked down to the lakeside, following a lovely deserted path along the shore for about 1.5 miles. We then turned inland and walked through woodland and rolling countryside until we reached Near Sawrey. Whilst in the village we took the opportunity to visit Beatrix Potter’s house at Hilltop, owned by the National Trust. It was well worth it (especially since we got in free as members!)
We then walked back to the car via Far Sawrey. Instead of driving back the way we’d come, Gilly had the bright idea of taking the car ferry across to Windermere on the other side of the lake – a great ending to an enjoyable walk
