Route: Porto Timoni
Area: North West Corfu
Date of walk: 23rd June 2017
Walkers: Andrew, Gilly and James
Distance: 2.3 miles
Ascent: 700 feet
Weather: Sunny and very hot
We made a late start today for two reasons: firstly to escape the boiling midday sun and, secondly, in order to to enjoy one of the spectacular sunsets for which the west coast of the island is renowned
We parked in the beautiful and unspoilt little village of Afionas and wandered out of the village along a dusty path. On the outskirts of the village we enjoyed a panorama over a number of small islands in the Ionian Sea, which we’d see in even better light later on
We followed a rocky track downhill and before long had our first sighting of the twin coves of Porto Timoni, which has a claim to be the most beautiful place on the whole of Corfu. We descended to the twin beaches and then climbed up to the far point of the walk, the tiny chapel dedicated to Saint Stilianos
From here we retraced our steps back to the start. Sunset was due in about 2 hours and the time was well spent in the 3 Brothers Taverna back in Afionas, which not only serves delicious fresh fish but also has an amazing view out to sea – a perfect place to watch the sun go down and a perfect end to today’s walk
