Route: Muncaster Castle
Area: South Western Lake District
Date of walk: 6th May 2014
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 2.5 miles
Weather: sunny
We parked in the car park outside the main gates to the castle – and then walked 6 miles to get in! To see why and how, see my Ravenglass walk
Having completed that walk, we entered the castle grounds and after lunch at the cafe we walked through the bluebell wood. That makes 4 bluebell walks in 5 days, but there are times when it’s impossible to have too much of a good thing. The flowers were spectacular
Muncaster Castle is home to the World Owl Centre and at 2.30pm every day you can meet the birds. It was a thrill to hold a barn owl in my gloved hand at the end of a fantastic demonstration
We wandered round the beautiful grounds for a while – the rhododendrons and azaleas being a particular highlight. Our earlier walk to Ravenglass had given us limited time and since this is a place with enough interest for a full day, we shall be back another time to see the areas we missed
