Another day, another valley. I’d enjoyed two wonderful valley walks in the last two days, one in the central lakes and the other in the west. Today I decided to revisit the east side of the district and explore remote Martindale which is really two valleys, being split in half by Beda Fell

I parked at St Martin’s Old Church and after walking back up the road for a short distance joined a bridleway to Howtown. I then walked to the shore of Ullswater to start a superb lakeshore section along the foot of Hallin Fell. This is a path which we’ve walked many times before and is one of the best in the Lake District

On reaching Sandwick Bay it was time to head inland and I followed a succession of paths along the feet of Boredale and Howe Grain before arriving back at the start

I sourced this walk from a booklet by Paul Buttle ‘Fifteen Walks from Patterdale and Ullswater’. I cost me £1 and was specially reprinted for the Catstycam walking shop in Glendridding – a real bargain considering the pleasure that this one walk had given me
