Route: Low Fell and Loweswater
Area: Western Lake District
Date of walk: 6th July 2013
Walkers: Andrew
Distance: 6.6 miles
Ascent: 1,500 feet
This is as good as it gets – a walk up my favourite fell, ending at my favourite pub, the Kirkstile Inn at Loweswarer. The weather was perfect, with not a cloud in the sky.
Gilly dropped me off at Thackthwaite and I made my way up to the top of Low Fell The views were superlative, and even though it was a Saturday, there was no one else around
Having savoured the panorama, I did a steep down and up to Darling Fell, which has lovely views too, though they don’t quite rival those of its taller neighbour. I walked down the ridge of Darling Fell to meet the old Mosser Road, and then along the shore of Loweswater through Holme Wood
It was then an easy hike along the track to Maggies Bridge towards my destination – the Kirkstile Inn
When I arrived there, Gilly was waiting for me at a table in the garden, with a pint of Loweswater Gold and a packet of crisps. I thought I was hallucinating for a moment but it was for real. What a perfect end to a perfect afternoon!

Thank you, I’m glad to be here
Low Fell, from the path leading from Thackthwaite
Mellbreak on the left and the Low Fell ridge on the right
Low Lorton and High Lorton
Heading up in the direction of Fellbarrow….
….and looking back to Crummock Water from a few yards further up
Further along the path to Low Fell
Looking back down the path, towards Lorton
Millbeck in the centre of the picture
Approaching the north top of Low Fell
Another view back to Millbeck, in the centre
Stairway to heaven
Loweswater comes into view - I’ll soon be walking through Holme Wood on the far shore
From the southern extremity of Low Fell, no words of mine can do justice to this view
After reluctantly leaving Low Fell, there’s a steep down and up to Darling Fell, ahead
Crummock Water from Darling Fell
Looking west from Darling Fell, towards the Irish Sea, such a contrast in the scenery whichever way you look
Loweswater - I’m heading for the building on the right, then along the far shore
Loweswater and Holme Wood
Looking back down over Loweswater along the old Mosser Road
Loweswater again
After reaching the edge of the lake, the path then goes through Holme Wood
In Holme Wood
The bothy on the shore of the lake - available to rent from the National Trust
Loweswater on a perfect day, looking towards Grasmoor and Mellbreak
Having left Loweswater, there’s still plenty of scenery left to enjoy, this is Mellbreak, from the track to Maggies Bridge
No arguing with this sign
A last lingering look back at Darling Fell and Low Fell
I started sprinting here….
….was it towards the church or the inn…..?
