Route: Hull Fish Trail
Area: East Yorkshire
Date of walk: 7th September 2013
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 4.8 miles
The Seven Seas Hull Fish Trail, which consists of a unique pavement of fish, from A-Z, is about 2 miles long, although our walk was longer as it coincided with the Freedom Festival, a 3 day annual event which attracts crowds of 75,000 or more
This meant that we made various diversions to see the entertainment on offer. There was music, dance, theatre and plenty more besides. We only saw a few of the acts and wished we’d had more time to spare
We also took the opportunity to revisit The Deep, one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world
Hull is on the shortlist for the UK City of Culture 2017 and I hope that the photos below show the city in a good light and assist in some small way with the bid – good luck Hull!

The start of the walk, in Queen Victoria Square. The object is to follow a sculptured trail of fish around the town
There’s a fish for every letter of the alphabet, and a few light hearted touches - such as a shark outside a bank
These ‘Art Cars’ are part of the Freedom Festival. This is a macabre ‘cremulator’ - hearse, crematorium and gravedigger combined
Another one - ‘Art Collision’ !
Not one of the art cars - this belongs to the Lord Mayor!
Princes Quay Shopping Centre
Holy Trinity, the largest parish church in England
…and again
Prince Street in the old town
Humber Dock Marina
Spurn Lightship
Across the Humber from the end of the marina
And another view across the Humber
One of the many live bands performing throughout the day at different venues in the city
The Deep - incredible both outside and in
The tidal barrier which protects the city from high tide surges - it’s the second biggest flood barrier in the country
We decide to visit The Deep
The new swingbridge over the River Hull, unique as pedestrians can stay on it as it rotates
The Arctic Corsair behind the Museums Quarter
St Marys Church, Lowgate
Queens Gardens
The wonderful Dinsdale’s Joke Shop in Hepworth Arcade
Come on you Hull!
Postscript: it was announced on 20th November 2013 that Hull had won the bid - fantastic news!
