Route: Bolton Abbey
Area: Yorkshire Dales
Date of walk: 26th October 2013
Walkers: Andrew
Distance: 8.2 miles
Ascent: 900 feet
I parked in the Bolton Abbey car park. The price is steep but when you realise what’s on offer it’s a bargain. After wandering around the ruins of the Abbey for a while, I walked upstream along the bank of the River Wharfe to enter Strid Wood
The river was roaring through the Strid, a narrow section between the rocks, where the river rushes through with huge force
After leaving Strid Wood, I walked up onto open moorland, where the terrain was in complete contrast to what had gone before. I didn’t see another soul on this section and there were far ranging views in all directions
After descending from the moors an easy track took me back from Halton East to Bolton Abbey. My only regret about this walk was not having come here before now – it’s a wonderful place, full of interest and beauty, and I hope to return again soon
