Route: Cape Agia Ekaterinis
Area: North East Corfu
Date of walk: 21st June 2017
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 3.4 miles
Ascent: 200 feet
Weather: Sunny and very hot
We started today’s walk from the lovely beach of Agios Spiridonas and walked along to the edge of the Andiniotissa Lagoon, which is a haven for wildlife and was one of the Durrell family’s favourite spots on the island. I waited by the edge of the lagoon for a while, hoping to see an otter or one of the many species of birds which inhabit the area but there was no sign of life at all, probably on account of the intense heat
After crossing the bridge over the lagoon we set out on the inland section of the walk along a dusty track which eventually brought us to the long white sandy expanse of Almiros beach, which marks the end of the Corfu Trail
We then set out on the return leg. We’d been saving the best for last and this section of the walk didn’t disappoint. We followed a wonderful rocky path which hugged the shoreline, passing by Cape Agia Ekaterinis, the most northerly point on Corfu. There were lovely views across the sea to the mountains of Albania as we went along. We were walking over jagged rocks much of the time, and anyone who follows this walk is recommended to leave the flipflops behind and to wear a decent pair of walking boots
All too soon we arrived back at Agios Spiridonas and from here we retraced our steps back to the start of a wonderful short walk
