Route: Five Uldale Fells
Area: Northern Lake District
Date of walk: 27th July 2013
Walkers: Andrew James and Stephen
Distance: 10.2 miles
Ascent: 2,700 feet
Uldale is a secluded area behind Skiddaw, and what it lacks in drama in makes up for in the isolated nature of the terrain.
We parked near Peter House Farm and joined the Cumbria Way for a short distance. After leaving the main path we climbed, in order of appearance, Great Cockup, Meal Fell, Brae Fell, Great Sca Fell and Knott
There were lots of ups and downs but the gradients were fairly gentle.
The weather was rather hazy and overcast, so the long distance views were not seen at their best, but at least the rain held off, and we all enjoyed the walk

We start out along the Cumbria Way
Further along the way, Whitewater Dash waterfall in the distance
Crossing Dash Beck
Brockle Crag, on the lower slopes of Great Cockup
Looking up to Black Nettle Hause
Bassenthwaite Lake, the only lake in the district to have ‘lake’ in its name
On the way up to Great Cockup - hopefully there won’t be one and we will arrive in the right place!
James and Stephen on the top
We now have to go down and up to our next destination Meal Fell, and then gain the ridge beyond
Trusmadoor, we’ve done the down and now for the up
Meal Fell - we decided to have lunch here, appropriately, but the midges decided to make a meal of us, so we departed in haste
On Little Sca Fell, the Solway Firth and Scotland are in the distance
We then head north over to Brae Fell
Brae Fell summit, no place to linger as there’s a wasps next in the cairn
Our final summit is Knott, and the summit cairn contains another wasps next
On the way down from Knott
Descending back to valley level
We rejoin the Cumbria Way and are almost back to the start point
