Scarborough walk - North Bay Scarborough

Storm Doris was forecast to sweep through the country today, and this prompted us to visit Scarborough in the hope of seeing some big waves. We were staying at Derwent View cottage in Hackness, and from there made the short journey to Scarborough. When we arrived at North Bay the weather was quite pleasant, so we decided to walk along the seafront to South Bay and back

The seas were quite dramatic as we strolled along the prom but as we reached South Bay it started raining, so we decided to visit the Harbour Bar – a Scarborough institution – ‘Ice Cream is Good for You’, says the sign inside

So far there had been no sign of the predicted storm, and we wondered if the forecast was inaccurate but when we emerged from the bar, there was a howling gale and it was clear that Doris had landed in Scarborough with a vengeance

The two mile walk back to the start was tortuous – we were walking into the teeth of the gale and it was an effort making forward progress. Horizontal rain worked its way into our waterproofs and within minutes we were soaked to the skin. It was tempting to beat a retreat and call for a taxi but pride prevented that. It was a relief to get back to the shelter of the car. Despite all that, it was a walk which we enjoyed – mostly in retrospect and after drying out
