We started today’s walk from the Market Place in the village of Binbrook in the Lincolnshire Wolds. After passing by the RAAF 460 Squadron Memorial we joined a public footpath leading out of the village. If it hadn’t been for a footpath sign we’d have entertained doubts about the route as it goes down the driveway of a seemingly private house, past the side door and out through the back garden. Beyond the house, we were in open countryside consisting of gently rolling hills and fields typical of the Lincolnshire Wolds
After crossing a walkway over some marshy ground, we passed by the site of the medieval nunnery of St Mary, founded in the 12th century and dissolved in 1539. Adjacent to the priory are the remains of the deserted settlement of Orford. To the passing walker there is no obvious sign of these old settlements, but there is some interesting information to be found in a leaflet published by the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service – click here
Beyond Orford we made our way through the fields to Stainton le Vale where we turned left to follow the road uphill for a short distance. More paths across fields brought us to Kirmond le Mire where remains of a Roman villa were found, although there is no visible evidence of this. Beyond Kirmond le Mire we followed a path, separated from the roadside by a hedge, and from here there were wonderful views over the surrounding hills and valleys. We crossed the road to follow a path across Binbrook Top which eventually descended gently back into Binbrook to end a very enjoyable walk

Thanks to the landowner, who has created this path beside the road
The area on the right, which lacks interest unless you know the history, is terraced farmland, possibly vineyards, and is of Roman origin. A Roman villa was nearby in the first of the darker coloured fields to the left
