Route: The River Derwent from Hackness
Area: North Yorkshire
Date of walk: 2nd May 2016
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 5.5 miles
Ascent: 300 feet
Weather: Overcast with some light rain
We were staying at Derwent View Hackness and started the walk from there – anyone not staying at the cottage could start from the nearby car park at the village hall. We walked out of the village along Mowthorp Road for a short distance before turning off to cross the footbridge over the River Derwent
Once on the river bank, navigation is straighforward – just follow the meandering course of the river as it flows along the valley. During the course of the walk we met some members of a nature study group who told us about a kingfisher nest further along. We kept a close look out but didn’t see any
Parts of the path were exceptionally muddy, and one section in particular through Bridge Farm was very unpleasant. Having reached the farm our plan had been to climb Broxa Banks into Broxa and then to walk back to Hackness along the top of the Rigg, but by now the weather had become dull and wet and we decided to walk back along the road
It had been an enjoyable walk but more enjoyment was to come as the Tour de Yorkshire was passing through the village later on. Read on…
