Route: Grisedale
Area: Eastern Lake District
Date of walk: 4th January 2016
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 7.1 miles
Ascent: 900 feet
Weather: Light drizzle – but good light – most of the time
Another cloudy day with the fell tops being out of sight suggested a low level walk and I decided to revisit the Ullswater area, having recently enjoyed a superb walk from Glenridding
We drove through Glenridding and parked in nearby Patterdale. From the car park we walked back along the road for a short distance before turning left along the lane to Grisedale which is surfaced at first but turns into a farm track and as it does so there unfolds a lovely view down the valley
Navigation was a simple affair – we just followed the track along the left hand side of the valley. This further reduces to a footpath which gradually becomes rougher and rougher although there are no difficulties. There was a sense of excitement as some of lakeland’s most dramatic peaks loomed ever closer as we walked towards the valley head
After climbing to a bridge below the climbing hut known as Ruthwaite Lodge we started out on the return leg on the other side of the valley. The views looking both forward and back were wonderful
When we reached Brownend Plantation we descended to the valley floor, crossed the footbridge over Grisedale Beck, and retraced our steps back into Patterdale. It had been a wonderful walk and one that I look forward to repeating in the future
