Hackness walk, Lowdales

Hackness

North York Moors

Route: Hackness Circular

Area: North York Moors

Date of walk: 24th February 2015

Walkers: Andrew and Gilly

Distance: 5.0 miles

Weather: Mostly sunny, cold wind

We were staying at Derwent View Hackness and started our walk from the cottage, though the walk could be started from elsewhere in the village

We walked round the path above the cottage and below Hackness Head to join the quiet country lane leading to Lowdales Farm. A family of buzzards circled overhead as we walked along the beautiful and secluded valley of Lowdales

Shortly after Lowdales Farm we turned off the track along a path leading uphill through Hagglands Wood. At the top of the path, the tabular nature of the surrounding hills becomes apparent and we followed a path across flat agricultural land to the small settlement of Silpho

We turned left at Binkleys Farm on the edge of Silpho and walked across the fields before heading down the valley into Hilda Wood, where we had a distant sighting of a deer. The path connects with Kirk Gate, which took us back into Hackness to conclude a lovely walk
