Weather: Bright, some sunshine
Scampston Hall is home to two wonderful and completely different gardens – the unique contemporary Walled Garden designed by Piet Oudolf, which opened in 2005, and The Park, designed by Capability Brown in 1782. We first entered into the Walled Garden, which is set within the 18C walls of the original kitchen garden. Click here for more information about this stunning space
We spent an enjoyable couple of hours wandering around the various garden rooms, each of which has its own character. The planting, which has been much imitated, was looking superb
We then made our way to the parkland and set out on the Cascade Walk, which leads to various points of interest in the surrounding parkland. I’ve not included a maps page as a garden guide is handed out at the entrance which contains a plan and other information. The recent drought (it hasn’t rained here for around six weeks), meant that the parkland was bone dry and that water levels in the lakes were very low and as a result the water gardens weren’t looking at their best. This didn’t spoil the visit in any way and we were pleased to have seen the Walled Garden at its stunning best
