Route: Hotham and North Cave Wetlands

I parked in the car park at North Cave Wetlands, a nature reserve of regional importance for birds, managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. I decided to save the reserve until the end of the walk and so headed back along the lane and into North Cave
After reaching the end of the village, I joined the attractive track which runs through The Park and past Hotham Hall. At this point it started to rain and the already dull skies became more overcast, so that I had to put the camera away for most of the walk
After arriving at the Hotham Arms I turned left along a quiet lane and at a crossroads I headed along the roadside in the direction of North Cave (not a pleasant section but it’s mercifully short) before re-entering the nature reserve via a small gate which leads into the reserve
Once back in the reserve I walked around the perimeter and spent some time in the South Hide. There was plenty to see through the binoculars – cormorant, heron, lapwing and various types of duck – but the photographic opportunities were limited in the dull light, and most of the birdlife was some distance away, so I only took a couple of pictures today. I walk through the pretty village of Hotham
At the Hotham Arms, I turn left to head out of the village
Walking along the lane up Hotham Hill, which is a mountain in these parts - about 100 feet above sea level
I descend the hill and turn left at the crossroads - 5 or 10 minutes of road walking follows
