Route: Glaramara and Allen Crags
Area: Southern Lake District
Date of walk: 12th March 2014
Walkers: Andrew
Distance: 7.4 miles
Ascent: 2,800 feet
The day before, my cousin Denise had texted to ask what my planned walk was for today, and I replied that I was going to climb ‘Glutamate’. I only realised after sending the message that this is what auto-correct does if you type in ‘Glaramara’
So Glaramara it was, and on a beautiful spring morning I parked in one of the roadside spaces just before Seathwaite and set off along the track towards Stockley Bridge. Before reaching the bridge I turned uphill to follow Hind Gill. It was fairly relentless going and hands were needed on odd occasions, but there were no real difficulties. Eventually I emerged onto the ridge line and it was an easy climb up to the top of Glaramara
Although it was a beautiful day it was also hazy, so the long distance views weren’t good, which was disappointing
There then followed lots of ups and downs along the ridge to Allen Crags, from where Great End and Great Gable looked majestic, with plenty of snow still lying around. The descent back via Ruddy Gill and Grains Gill was long but the gradient was gentle
What a privilege it was to be up in the fells on such a day as this
