We started today’s walk from Derwent View Hackness – for anyone not staying at the cottage a convenient starting point would be the car park of the nearby village hall.
We walked out of the village along the road to Forge Valley, with the River Derwent close by on our right. After passing Mill Farm we left the road to join a public footpath which climbs uphill and then follows the foot of Walker Flat Wood. The views from the elevated path along the valley are wonderful along this section of the walk, and get better and better as the route passes above St Peter’s Church and Hackness Hall
Just beyond the hall we descended to the valley road but within the space of a few yards left it again to climb up through Greengate Wood. On leaving the wood we joined a track which took us along the tabular top of Suffield Heights and through Suffield Ings. We then descended through Hawthorn Wood and just after leaving the wood enjoyed a surprise view of Scarborough Castle and the North Sea 5 miles away to the east
The elevated path gradually descended to the road, and from here we followed the road back to the start, passing by the Everley Country House Café as we did so. It was a superb walk in lovely late autumn conditions
