Route: A short walk to Crummock Water
Area: Western Lake District
Date of walk: 3rd January 2014
Walkers: Andrew and Gilly
Distance: 3.0 miles
Ascent: 300 feet
It was yet another day of horrendous weather with gales and driving rain in the morning. After visiting Maryport to see the stormy seas, it cleared up a little and so we decided to go on a short afternoon walk
We parked near the Kirkstile Inn and walked across the foot of Mellbreak to the northern end of Crummock Water. It was blowing a gale and it was hard to stay upright at times – a high level walk would have been suicidal in these conditions
After walking along the lakeshore for a while we returned to the start via the bank of Park Beck, feeling suitably refreshed after our short but bracing walk

The weather kept us indoors in the morning, but we were entertained by the red squirrels
Later that morning we drove to Maryport to check out the conditions
This local man was on the news later, he was valiantly trying to keep the drains clear outside his house
The locals were saying they couldn’t recall conditions like this
We’d been for a stroll along this prom a few days earlier!

We head away from the lake and follow the path beside Park Beck
Passing by Lowpark
This unfrequented lane leads us back to the start
The Kirkstile Inn and Loweswater Church - we are regular visitors to one of these, but I’m not saying which one!
