South Dalton is a picture postcard estate village set in rolling countryside, but it suffers from one defect as far as walkers are concerned – there are no public footpaths in the vicinity. All is not lost however, for a quiet road runs through the beautiful parkland of the Dalton Estate and this makes for a good short walk.
We’ve been to South Dalton many times before, the purpose of our visit invariably having been to dine at the superb Pipe and Glass Inn – a pub and Michelin starred restaurant in the village. Anyone following this walk would be well advised to time their outing so as to finish up there at journey’s end. If you were to visit the inn first, it’s doubtful you’d manage to start the walk
We parked near the village pond and before setting off along the estate road visited St Mary’s Church, which boasts a tall graceful spire that can be seen for miles around. We then walked through the village, past the Pipe and Glass, and entered the Dalton Estate
The usual maps page is included but is hardly necessary as it would be impossible to get lost. It’s a simple question of walking along the road past Dalton Hall and then retracing your steps back to the start whenever you feel the time is right – in our case it was just beyond Keeper’s Cottage
