Black Fell

Black Fell

Southern Lake District

Route: Holme Fell and Black Fell

Area: Southern Lake District

Date of walk: 16th January 2014

Walkers: Andrew

Distance: 7.7 miles

Ascent: 1,600 feet

Holme Fell and Black Fell are among the most southerly and lowest of all the lakeland fells. As it was another overcast day, with clouds obscuring the higher tops, this was a good choice

I parked in the National Trust car park at Tom Gill and after a fairly stiff but easy climb I was soon at the top of Holme Fell. There was a great view of Coniston Water from here

The next objective, Black Fell, is not connected with Holme Fell so I needed to descend from the latter before climbing up to the former. The view from Black Fell was good, though it was a shame that conditions were so overcast. At least it didn’t rain

On the way back I walked along the shore of Tarn Hows, an enchanting place and well worth a visit in its own right. From there it was a short stroll back to the start
